When the cell was rolled out Toshiba noted that it had plans for a diverse line of products that would be cell based including HDTV. Interfacing to the cell processor comes by way of the Rambus FlexIO interface which Toshiba has already licensed. The new license for XDR memory controllers would allow Toshiba to incorporate the Rambus memory controller directly onto chips.
