Where is Cell headed?

Linley Gwennap opins in Nikkei Electronics Asia about the future of the Cell processor:

Breaking new ground in microprocessor design, Sony, IBM, and Toshiba disclosed some preliminary information on the new Cell processor that the three companies are developing together.

The Cell processor is initially designed for Sony's next-generation PlayStation, but the companies claim the chip and others like it will appear in a wide range of consumer and computer applications.
He doesn’t believe Cell will find its way into Apple because Apple software would have to be rewritten.

He doesn’t believe Cell will find its way into cell phones because it would be overkill.

He doesn’t believe Cell will find its way into PC’s. Why? I am not certain, but I believe it is because he believes programming Cell will be a challenge.

He writes:

Cell may appear in a handful of different systems as well as in PlayStation 3, but probably not in PCs, Macintoshes, cell phones, or other popular consumer products.
