Self-assembled computers

Technology Research News reported in January 2005 that “Researchers from Duke University, Rambus Inc. and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have devised a pair of computer architectures that would be built from self-assembling DNA.”

“It will be 5 to 10 years before a proof-of-concept self-assembled DNA computer can be built, and more than 10 years before such a computer could be ready for practical use” said Chris Dwyer, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and computer science at Duke.

In March 2005, Duke News & Communications reported on the project.

“Instead of waiting weeks for computers to grind out solutions to complex problems, scientists may someday get answers instantly thanks to a new type of "oracle" computer that will have all the answers built in, predict Duke University computer scientists and engineers. When a question is posed, the computer will provide the answer already paired with the question in the very structure of the computer's processing unit.”
