Sony needs blue lasers

RegHardware reports that Sony President Ryoji Chubachi claims that the shipping goal of 4million PS3s by the end of March 2007 is still "within our reach". Chubachi admitted that the limited availability of the blue lasers is a weak link.

Until the 1990's, blue lasers "were large and expensive gas laser instruments which rely on population inversion in rare gas mixtures and need high currents and strong cooling." A series of inventions in the 1990's enabled the "development of small, convenient and low priced blue, violet and UV lasers."
