Two reads . . .

The Mining Camps Speaks is a coffee table and field guide reference suitable for both a couch and field explorer of ghost towns and former mining settlements of the American West. It combines text with an abundance of photographs of structures, equipment, household and mining artifacts. It also includes useful appendixes with a glossary, listing of museums, mine tours and a bibliography.

The Mining Camp Speaks by Beth and Bill Sagstetter is a prefect gift for an explorer or history buff.

Five stars.

***

Memorial Day is a fast-paced thriller. Author Vince Flynn’s hero Mitch Rapp does battle with al Qaeda in Afghanistan and around the world as he saves the world. Memorial Day is an uncomplicated entertaining escape that is prefect for those mindless times. If it were a movie, it would be rated “R” for graphic violence.

Hero Rapp is a little too stereotypical and the plot too predictable to be more than a "good" book.

Four stars.
