Flash memory drive

Samsung Electronics has developed a higher-capacity version of its solid-state disk, a flash-memory-based replacement for hard disks. The drive packs 32G of flash into the same space required for a 1.8-inch hard drive.

Pros: Faster - 18 seconds as compared to 31 seconds to display the desktop screen. Durability - no moving parts. Silent running.

Con: Cost - Flash memory costs about $30 per gigabyte. A 32GB SSD drive currently would cost about $960.

Solar laptop & MP3 player

Micro-Star International displayed a notebook computer and an MP3 player at CeBIT that use on-board solar panels to recharge and extend battery life. They do not expect to market products, rather the the computer and MP3 player are experimental concepts of the future.

Laptop security

Seagate Technology and Secude IT Security have on display a fortified laptop that features both full encryption of the hard drive and software for easier password management. The hard drive automatically encrypts all data and can be instantly erased.

The laptop has a software system that administers add-on security features including smart cards and biometric ID systems.
