XDR - well positioned

Dylan McGrath writing for EETimes reports that the PC market will only consume 50% of the DRAM market in three years, down from the current 65% - so says Mueez Deen, director of graphics and consumer DRAM marketing for Samsung Semiconductor Inc.

Rambus product marketing manager Victor Echevarria believes that there is a
misperception in the market that XDR DRAM, a proprietary Rambus technology that is purported to provide the highest bandwidth for demanding applications, is a niche market. Echevarria cited a report by market analysis firm IDC, which forecasts that XDR DRAM demand will grow steadily, exceeding 800 million 256 megabit equivalent units by 2009. Echevarria also said that forthcoming shipments of Sony's PlayStation 3 will drive a lot of XDR into the marketplace.
"XDR is positioned well to be a broadly applicable memory," Echevarria said.

Ramboids are hoping that Mr. Echevarria is also a prophet.

Hat tip to Joe of the Pinehurst Thread for the link.
