Samsung ships GDDR4

Wolfgang Gruener writing for tgdaily.com reports:

Samsung is shipping fourth generation graphic double data rate or GDDR4 which it claims is 56% faster than GDDR3. The 256 Mbit chip runs at 2.5Gbit per second and Samsung hopes it will compete with XDR (Rambus) which reportedly has a bandwidth of 12.8 GByte per second.

Gruener speculates that Rambus may have some difficulty convincing potential customers to adopt XDR because of its business model which requires licensing fees for every product sold with Rambus IP. Mr. Gruener does not address the possibility that GDDR4 may in fact include Rambus IP, thus entitling Rambus to a royalty.
