Clive Akass writing for Personal Computer World reports that Intel chief, Paul Otellini, has said that chip ratings will soon be measured on a performance per watt, shifting from the GHz per chip standard.
Intel will launch new chips next year that are power optimized for their intended platforms. The chips code named Woodcrest (servers) rated 80w TDP, Conroe (desktops) rated 65w TDP, and Merom (laptops) rated 5w TDP, will be made using 65 nanometer technology. TDP, or thermal design power, is the maximum for which the casing and cooling has to be designed.
