IBM demos Cell in server

IBM Corporation is reported to have huddled last week with a few select clients in a hotel room to showoff a blade server board featuring Cell. No word as to who was invited to the sneak preview, but they could have used the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo – E3 as their cover.

An unnamed IBM engineer claimed that each board featured two Cell processors, two 512 Mb XDR DRAM chips and two South Bridge LSIs. The Cell processors were demonstrated running at 2.4-2.8 GHz. "We are driving the Cell processors at higher rates in the laboratory.”

Separately, IBM Corporation and Toppan Printing Company, Ltd. (Tokyo) announced they would be jointly developing a 45-nanometer chip-making process. They hope to have it ready for production by mid-2007.
