Business Ethics, The Magazine of Corporate Responsibility has released its list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens (Best) for 2005. The Best are selected from the socially screened Domini Index and the Russell 1000, which consists of the 1000 largest publicly traded firms.
The firms are rated by averaging each company’s scores in eight values. The values that are measured are the company’s performance in respect to eight stakeholder groups: shareholders, community, minorities, employees, environment, human rights, customers and governance. The eight variables have different values and are standardized for the final averaging by determining each value’s deviation from the mean within its category.
The number one spot in 2005 went to Cummins, Inc., an engine maker who has reduced diesel engine emissions by 90 percent. Other Best include:
#5 Intel
#7 Hewlett-Packard
#17 Lucent
#19 Cisco Systems
#21 Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.
#24 Genentech Inc.
#38 Cypress Semiconductor Corp.
#44 XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc.
#48 Rambus Inc.
#50 Texas Instruments Inc.
