Is it a thing, a company or a member of a cult?
Thing
In 1985, Mastertronic, Ltd., released a video game – One Man And His Droid - in which a character was known as a Ramboid. This character was a male form of alien sheep located on the planet Andromadous.
Company
The Register in an article by Mike Magee dated March 8, 2001, referred to “Ramboid memory” – memory made by Rambus, Inc.
Cult
Later on March 18, 2001, the same Mike Magee of The Register adjusted his definition and referred to Ramboids as a “splenetic and vitriolic version (of people who buy and sell Rambus shares), producing some of the Finest Flames of the Week we’ve ever seen fit to print. And it is these who are Ramboid.”
Over the years, being called a Ramboid has become a badge of honor for many Rambus shareholders who post and follow the message boards of AOL, Yahoo and others.
The earliest media reference to Ramboid that I found was Mike Magee’s made on March (1)8, 2001. The earliest board post was a post made by “Heatshield” on November 11, 2000, on Ace’s Hardware general message board. His post was “Wow. Great post. And you are no Ramboid/Intel freak. People might have to listen to you. I’ve tried my best to enlighten . . . (hehe). Seriously, Dean, nice post.”
Who really coined the term? Somebody knows and I am hoping they will let me know. Stay tuned.
